How To Connect With The Universe Spiritually

how to connect with the universe spiritually

Learning how to connect with the universe spiritually is all about learning about the power of intention, letting go your ego and using prayer and meditation correctly.

On a spiritual level we can never be disconnected from the universe. We are not only in the universe but the universe is in us.

A drop of water in the ocean is not only part of the ocean but the ocean is part of the drop. You can remove the drop of water from the ocean but it will always be a part of it because that is where it came from.

We all come from the spiritual realm which many refer to as the universe – that all encompassing idea of creation and everything we know life to be.

You can never be disconnected from that where you come from because in essence that is who you truly are. You may have a body and many ideas about who you think you are but ultimately you are pure spirit.

You are your soul. You are that part that comes from the universe and by virtue of your true nature you are already connected to the universe.

The decisive question for man is: Is he related to something infinite or not? That is the telling question of his life. Only if we know that the thing which truly matters is the infinite can we avoid fixing our interests upon futilities, and upon all kinds of goals which are not of real importance.

– Carl Jung

The real question is not whether you are connected to the universe but rather how clear your connection is and how aware you are of it through your consciousness.

People who live a more spiritual life have a greater awareness of their connection to the universe and the infinite. Spirituality as a broader idea is therefore a way for us to connect to the universe.

What is “The Universe”?

To really understand how to connect with the universe spiritually we have to understand this popular term ‘The Universe’.

This idea of ‘The Universe’ gets thrown around a lot in law of attraction literature and modern spirituality.

What does it really mean?

The Universe can be used interchangeably to God, Universal Intelligence or The Source.

It refers to that unseen source of everything. It refers to that which gives birth to everything seen and unseen in the world as we know it.

In scientific terms the universe refers to the cosmos but in spirituality terms it refers more to the endless endless existence of all matter and space.

For most the very word ‘God’ has too many other connotations to religion and religious dogma. The same can be said for words like Creator or The Divine.

The term The Universe is more commonly used in modern spiritual literature as it strips all religious connotations from this unseen, universal intelligence that is the origin of everything in both the seen and unseen world.

Since the universe encapsulates everything that we can comprehend in our world it is a very fitting description of all of creation.

We also know now that through our scientific understanding of the universe it is endless and continually expanding. There are also a lot of theories around how our consciousness affects this ever expanding universe that we live in.

When I think of and speak of ‘the universe’ I see it as this universal intelligence that is in everything. There is an organizing intelligence that orchestrates this perfection called life.

This universal intelligence is what gives life, maintains life and is where we came from and ultimately where we will return to.

How To Connect With The Universe Spiritually

Can you ever be disconnected from life? Of course not. This strange and perplexing concept called life is baffling to even the greatest scientists.

We know that there are X amount of requirements to sustain life for almost every living organism but ultimately it is the spirit that gives life.

The truth is that even just by virtue of being alive you are already connected to the universe. You can never be disconnected from your Source.

Learning how to connect with the universe spiritually is all about reconnecting with something that you are never really disconnected from. The only disconnect is in your awareness.

You can take a drop of water from the ocean but its essence will always be that where it came from.

You can never be disconnected from the source of everything. That which gives birth to everything seen and unseen is a force that is the very essence of life.

The question is not whether you are connected to it or not. The real question is whether you are conscious and aware of this connection.

Awareness is the key to connecting to the universe spiritually and one of the most powerful ways to do it is through intention.

1. Connecting With The Universe Through Intention

Intention is a powerful way to connect to the universe spiritually. In our western world and the English language the word intention basically means that we have a goal, a purpose or a plan.

Having an intention means that you have an aim or a target.

In the Bhagavad Gita and Sanskrit (which is the origin of the word intention) it has quite a different meaning though – mostly because of the limitations of the English language and translations.

The true meaning of intention is that which you CREATE in your mind with will, desire and imagination.

Intention is something that you connect to and it is a universal energy that allows you to ‘create’ through your thoughts. This idea is reflected in a completely different tradition as well.

In the American Indian tradition, shamans considered intention an energy that we can connect with and that all of creation is connected through intention.

In the universe there is an immeasurable, indescribable force which shamans call intent, and absolutely everything that exists in the entire cosmos is attached to intent by a connecting link.

– Carlos Castaneda

These ideas were also reflected by two great scientific minds. Both Albert Einstein and Max Planck talked about intention and the idea of a “force” that intends things into the material world and that animates all life.

Intention is therefore an energy that you connect to and by using your will, your thoughts and your mind you can establish a connection to ‘the matrix of all matter’.

Intention becomes your Divine link to the universe.

Since there is no physical and tangible link, it can only be linked up spiritually; through the invisible part of who you are.

All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.

– Max Planck

These ideas that are now becoming more mainstream through quantum physics is starting to create a direct link between spirituality and creation.

What was written in The Bible; “It is the Spirit that gives life…” is now scientific fact. It is the unseen and the invisible that causes the seen and the visible to come to life.

The observer effect in quantum physics clearly illustrates how your attention and intention is what causes manifestation.

If your intention is a connecting link to the universe then the one thing that clogs it up more than anything else is the ego.

2. Connecting With The Universe By Letting Go Of Your Ego

Learning how to connect with the universe spiritually is about learning to let go of everything that you think you are. Your ego is an idea. It’s often a collection of ideas that you hold about yourself and who/what you think you are.

How do you define yourself? The most common definitions we hold about ourselves are:

  • I am a doctor/accountant/bus driver (any occupation)
  • I am a mom/dad/grandma
  • I am rich/poor/middle class (your position in society)
  • I am fat/fit/skinny etc.
  • I am beautiful/attractive
  • I am the manager/the president etc.
  • I am right you are wrong

Basically everything you believe about yourself who you think you are makes up your ego. The ego places a lot of demand on you. It is your persona that allows you to function in society.

Your ego will convince you that life is all about You and it always wants to be ‘better than’ everyone else, it wants to be important and ultimately it will convince you that you are alone and that you have to fight to be on top.

Your ego is what causes you to feel offended. It is what wants you to win, to be right, to be superior and to have more and more and more of everything.

The ego is not bad but it prevents you from really understanding who you really are and above all it prevents you from living your life from that place inside you that is who you really are.

Your higher self, your soul or your spirit is in many ways the opposite of your ego.

Your Higher Self KNOWS that you are not your ego. It knows that you are pure spirit and that who you are is not your body, your personality or any of the things you have or have achieved.

Your higher self only has one goal and that is to be at peace. It wants to experience love and ultimately wants to experience your higher purpose in life.

When you start living beyond your ego you start living more from your higher self. You let go of many of the incessant needs of the ego and you seek out peace, love and joy instead of external approval.

You become more inner directed rather than outer directed. The more you live from your Higher Self rather than your ego the more you will be connected to the universe spiritually.

You will never suppress your ego completely because it is part of the human condition but pressing it sufficiently to allow your higher self to be more prominent in your life will help you maintain an awareness of your connection to the universe.

That connecting link that we spoke of earlier that is intention actually gets clogged up by the ego. The more you can let go of your ego the less resistance there will be with this connecting link called intention.

One of the most effective ways to overcome the ego is through prayer and meditation.

3. Connecting With The Universe Through Prayer and Meditation

Prayer and meditation are powerful ways to connect with the universe spiritually but both are just a means to an end.

It is a way to help you transcend the physical everyday world and become more conscious of the truth that lies below the surface of everyday awareness.

The ego is dead-set on keeping you on the level of everyday awareness. The mundane functions of life, your desire to have your needs fulfilled and your ego’s demand to be ‘more than…’ and ‘better than…’ can be exhausting.

Meditation in particular allows you to remove the distractions of everyday life. It allows you to suspend the needs of your ego and connect with your higher self.

Connecting with your higher self is invigorating. It is also freeing because you realize that all the worries and concerns that occupy 99% of your mind are of no concern to your higher self.

Your higher self is that part of you that comes from the Source. It is your connection to the eternal and to the universe.

The more you start living from your Higher Self the more your life will be connected to the universe. Prayer and meditation are tools that can help you move beyond your ego and live a life that is more connected to the universe.

When you’re connected to the power of intention, everywhere you go, and everyone you meet, is affected by you and the energy you radiate. As you become the power of intention, you’ll see your dreams being fulfilled almost magically, and you’ll see yourself creating huge ripples in the energy fields of others by your presence and nothing more.

– Dr. Wayne Dyer

The real irony is that once you start shedding the needs of the ego by living more from your Higher Self, everything you desire comes to you almost effortlessly.

That is because creation does not happen from the ego but from your Higher Self and your connection to the universe.

As long as you are trying to manifest or create anything from the ego, it will always be filled with stress, struggle and worry. The ego has no connection to the universe.
