What Is The Spiritual Meaning Of Dreaming About Water?

What Is The Spiritual Meaning Of Dreaming About Water

What is the spiritual meaning of dreaming about water? Water is symbolic of life, abundance and purity and these 3 ideas reflect the meaning of your water dreams either directly or indirectly.

You come into this life submerged in water in the womb. Your very first experience of life is one where you are completely immersed in water.

Some water dreams are actually not dreams at all but rather memories that are lodged deep in your super conscious mind.

There are a number of symbolic meanings that relate to water specifically. Within this there could be a great many dreams and I hope to address your own dream in some way.

As you read through some of the symbolisms, pay attention to what appeals to you most. Those are the meanings that your intuition will recognize and they will relate most closely to your own dreams.

If you have recurring dreams – dreams that repeat either exactly or that repeat with similar themes then there is undoubtedly a message in those dreams for you.

Pay attention!

The Enigmatic Qualities of Water

While water has many practical uses, there is an enigmatic quality about water that goes well beyond its many mundane uses.

When we talk about what is the spiritual meaning of dreaming about water we need to explore this in a bit more depth to really understand what different dreams about water could mean.

1. Water as the essence of life:

Water is as essential to human life as oxygen is. In fact, every living organism needs water to some extent.

Water is synonymous with life.

You are 60% water. Your brain is about 70% water while even your bones contain 30% water.

70% of the planet is water.

The spiritual meaning of dreaming about water most often relates to this connection between water and the essence of life. You can argue that the life force is not only present in water but that it is a very extension of our own consciousness.

2. Water has a consciousness:

There is an intelligence in water that we are only just starting to understand. Water is not some innate ‘dead’ substance.

It is a substance that has an intelligence. Some argue that water has a consciousness and that this consciousness is somehow connected or related to our own consciousness.

The very life force that flows within you also flows within that water that you drink.

One of the most poignant illustrations of this fact is with the work of Dr. Emoto In his book, Hidden Messages of Water he clearly illustrates how water reacts to thoughts.

He clearly shows that water responds to love or hate in the same way that we respond to it on an energetic level.

What is the spiritual meaning of dreaming about water? On the level of consciousness these dreams tend to reflect something that is preva;lent in your current consciousness.

This can be a major life issue, some obstacle that you need to overcome or even an inspiration to help you move forward in life.

3. The fluidity of water:

One of water’s most amazing qualities is its fluidity. There are many liquids to be found in oor natural world but most of them are predominantly made up of water.

Bruce Lee famously said: “Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

Water takes on any shape we place it in. It is fluid and flexible and not confined by the limitations that other substances have.

Water is formless and also effortless in the way it adapts and adopts to wherever it goes.

This is a wonderful analogy for our own lives. To be truly flexible, to flow and to allow life to unfold naturally for us.

When we try with effort to ‘push and pull’ our lives into alignment we inevitably experience stress and strain.

In the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu speaks more of water in this way.

Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.

Lao Tzu

By being ‘soft’ and not fighting things we can weather away even the biggest obstacles.

The 3 Spiritual Symbols of Water

There are numerous meanings and symbols attached to water. In virtually every religion and spiritual discipline, water is involved in some way.

There are 3 main spiritual meanings of water as a symbol and as symbolizing some deeper meaning.

1. Water as a Symbol of Life

I’ve already discussed this to some extent but water as a life giving substance has immense spiritual meaning.

Not only does water sustain life on a physical level, it symbolizes life. When a seed sprouts and starts top grow the water is the essence of what makes that happen.

When something is growing and living, it is the water that allows that process of life to continue and to flourish.

In the absence of water, life starts to slow down and often ceases to exist.

2. Water as a Symbol of Abundance

Something really interesting about water is the fact that there is a finite amount of water on this planet. It can move places or change state (freeze or evaporate) but there is ultimately only that much water on this planet.

And there is a lot of it.

In fact, there is an abundance of water – enough to sustain all living organisms a thousand times over.

When you look at the ocean and the mighty rivers, then you realize that there is just an abundance of water.

This abundance is one of the major symbols of water in a dream. The fact that there is MORE than enough of it is something we tend to lose sight of – especially when there are droughts.

3. Water as a Symbol of Purity

Throughout history in almost every religion, water symbolized purification and cleansing. Water can purify and cleanse things on the physical level. It can clean almost anything and water can shape and carve even the hardest rock.

This analogy is incredibly important when we look at the symbolism of water.

Water can ‘cleanse’ you – not from your sins but from your wrongful thinking. The symbolism of cleansing is there to remind you that you can renew yourself by ‘washing away’ all the false beliefs you may hold about yourself.

While religions loved to attach sin, evil and impurity to mankind, the symbolism of being ‘cleaned and purified’ is a powerful symbol to the mind – one that anyone can easily understand.

From this point of view the spiritual meaning of dreaming about water is really powerful because the image speaks very clearly to us.

The Spiritual Meanings Of Dreaming About Water

Dreams about water can come in many forms. It can be dreams about being thirsty and lounging for water, it could be dreams about drowning or even dreams about being in the rain.

Dreams almost never have literal meanings.

The mind conjures up all sorts of very creative ‘experiments’ in the dream state.

To make this even more complicated, not all dreams have a specific meaning either. When a dream has a specific meaning or message to you, your intuition will tell you.

You will feel a strong desire to uncover the meaning and the dream will be benevolent and persistent in reminding you of it.

There are of course endless ‘types’ of water dreams – each with its own individual meanings. I will aim instead to cover the most common types of water dreams and talk more about the general meanings to help you understand your own dreams about water better.

1. The Meaning of Water as Life Energy

Water sustains life and is the very essence of life. The spiritual meaning of dreaming about water often relates to this fact either directly or indirectly.

These dreams are either a call to action or a reminder that something essential in your life is missing or out of balance.

This could be anything but it is always something that is spiritually important in your life.

It could be love, joy, inner peace or even better health.

Dreams where you are struggling in water; feeling like drowning or feeling like you are overwhelmed by water are common in this category of water dreams.

A very common dream about water is actually one where you are drowning. Most people wrongly start to worry about these dreams – thinking is a foreboding of their death.

Relax!

This is a very common dream and like most dreams it has nothing to do with a prediction or a warning of your (imminent) death.

It is merely a longing for more of something that you desire at the highest level of your being.

2. The Meaning Of Water as a Symbol of Abundance

As a symbol of the abundance of the universe, water can be a powerful reminder that there is more than enough of everything we want and need in life.

We tend to lose sight of this fact – especially when it comes to money and finances.

Dreams where you are rained upon and where you are in rain storms are good examples of this type of water dream.

Dreams of drought, being in barren landscapes or dreams where you are thirsty and desperately seeking water are quite similar in meaning.

The spiritual meaning of dreaming about water in this sense is a longing for your NATURAL state which is one of abundance – a state where you need nothing and want nothing.

If you are in circumstances in your own life where you experience lack and limitation then these dreams are often a poignant reminder that ALL the abundance of the universe is available to you now.

3. The Meaning of Water as A Symbol Of Purifying

The spiritual meaning of dreaming about water in the sense of it cleaning, washing away or purifying something does not relate the religious connotations of you being sinful and that you need redemption.

The real meaning of these dreams relate to you ‘purifying’ your thoughts, your life and your mind to the extent that you align more to who you really are at the highest level.

Dreams where water is washing away something; where floods clear a path or where water is cleaning something to reveal something else are symbolic of your true potential being hidden and undiscovered.

Allow yourself to blossom and allow your true magnificent self to be revealed.

Your ‘sinful thoughts’ if there ever was something like that are all those thoughts that keep you from being all that you can be.
