What is my spiritual power? Do I even have ‘one’ and how do I discover it within myself? Your spiritual power is not one particular ‘gift’ that you are born with but rather a plethora of powers like intuition, manifestation and love.
Your spiritual power is beyond measure and each and every one of us have within ourselves a wealth of power and possibility.
Many people on a spiritual path want to know ‘what is my spiritual power’ as if there is a particular power that was bestowed upon them at birth. The idea of power is an interesting idea when you relate it to spiritual ideas.
Power, in its true meaning of the word, is about affecting influence and dominance over others. That is not very spiritual.
Power also implies control or influence over events which is a much better spiritual ideal. The real irony is that when you truly connect with your higher self, the external events and circumstances in your life becomes insignificant.
Your true spiritual power is your ability to reconnect with who you really are.
You are not your name, or your gender or your occupation or any of the cultural identities that you may identify with or define yourself by.
When you identify and define yourself by any of these ideas, you are living from your ego. The opposite to this is to live from your higher self.
When you live from the ego, your life is one of a human being having the occasional spiritual experiences.
When you live from your higher self then your life is that of a spiritual being having a human experience.
You are not a body with a soul. You are a soul with a body.
Your soul has taken on your body to experience this life in this time. When you die, your body will die but your soul can never die.
Coming to this realization is the starting point to open yourself up to answer your big question ‘what is my spiritual power’ ?
Freeing yourself from all the demands of the ego will help you uncover your true spiritual power.
Understanding Spiritual Power
There is no doubt about the fact that spiritual masters walked this earth over many centuries. Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Rama – these great spiritual avatars were believed to be human incarnates of God herself.
Did these spiritual avatars have supernatural powers? If we can believe history, then yes. Yet, in some form or another, all these great avatars had a message that they are no different than us.
Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.
John 14:12 (The Bible)
There is a big misunderstanding about spiritual power. People are seeking some sort of hidden power within themselves that they are hoping lies hidden inside them somewhere.
The truth is that we all have spiritual power. Some develop these powers while others go through their entire life without even contemplating the idea.
There are many mediums and psychics who claim to have ‘superhuman power’ but is that a unique gift or are they simply tapping into an innate power within them that we all possess?
I believe that we all have innate spiritual power. Your intuition, your ability to perceive energy, your ability to heal, your ability to create your future.
These are all innate possibilities that lie dormant within all people. Every great spiritual avatar was “trained” from a very early age. They may have come into this world with a higher consciousness, but still had to be trained to suppress the ego and live from their higher Self.
If you are seeking a spiritual power within yourself, for what purpose do you seek it?
Does it come from an egoist desire to be special and significant?
If this is the case then you will probably never find it. Your spiritual power will reveal itself as your transcend your own ego. It can not become prominent or dominant in your life if the ego is in charge.
Can you develop your intuitive abilities? Absolutely. With training and focussed attention anyone can.
Can you develop your healing abilities? Absolutely. With training and focussed attention anyone can.
Can you develop your psychic abilities? Absolutely. With training and focussed attention anyone can.
The question is not whether you can. The real question is whether developing these abilities come naturally and flows to you without effort.
Does it feel like your calling and part of your purpose? Or does it feel forced and unnatural?
7 Spiritual Powers To Cultivate
If you feel that it is your calling to do spiritual work in healing, past life regressions or intuitive work then you and only you will truly know.
You will most likely have inclinations and feel a calling to do that. If that is you, pursue it! You will be sensitive to your natural abilities but will most likely need some training and guidance to develop it.
There is however something beyond all that; spiritual power that we can all tap into in our daily lives.
Remember our initial definition of power?
It is the ability to influence events. It is the ability to affect changes in our everyday lives. Most pursue spiritual power to change outside circumstances but the real spiritual power is to affect your inner world.
It is the inner world that creates the outer world. If your energy and attention are first and foremost to affect the outer world then your are living from the go.
If your energy and attention are on your inner word then and only then can you truly tap into your spiritual power.
It is the difference between power and force.
Force is when you work on the outside circumstances and conditions. Force is the energy that leads to conflict and wars.
True power is the energy that affects real change. It is the power that allows someone like Sadhguru to unite 9 million people under a common cause of love, goodwill and compassion.
So, how can you start to tap into your own innate spiritual power? Here are 7 spiritual powers that you can cultivate and grow in your own experience to not only make your own life more joyous and fulfilling but to spread that to everyone whose lives you touch.
1. The Power of Intuition
Intuition is something that we all have. It is how your highest self communicates with you. It gives you access to higher information and guidance beyond what your senses and reasoning mind can give you.
We’ve all had a “gut feeling” or a sense when making a decision or being confronted by someone.
Becoming more sensitive and noticing your intuitive hunches will help you develop your intuition. When you start trusting your intuition you can start trusting your Self more and be guided in pursuing your higher goals instead of the ego demands of your mind.
2. The Power Of Gratitude
Living in a state of gratitude raises your energy. Gratitude has the power to nullify most lower energies. When you are grateful you can not feel stressed or angry or fearful.
Gratitude is a power only when you decide to consciously utilize it in your life. When it becomes a habit to be grateful for everything you have and even everything you still want then it shifts your energy.
3. The Power of Joy
Happiness is something that most people strive for. Happiness is also dependant on “things”. By nature, this can never last. When you get the things that you think will make you happy, it only gives birth to the next thing.
Joy, on the other hand is independent of things. Joy is an inner sense of happiness that you feel “for no apparent reason”.
When you ARE joyful and detach from all the things that you believe you need to be happy then you will attract more joy into your life.
Joy is an energy that radiates from your life. It is infectious and attracts people to you. People would want to be around you because “it feels good” just to be around you.
4. The Power of Forgiveness
Forgiveness is a spiritual power that frees you from your past. So many people are trapped by events and circumstances from their past because they can not forgive.
Forgiveness is not something you do for someone else. It is something you do for yourself. It is an act of cutting off hate, resentment and fear that traps you and prevents joy and love from blossoming.
5. The Power of Inner Peace
We live in a world where everybody is pursuing more and better “stuff”. This creates immense amounts of stress and anxiety.
Yet, what we are all really hoping to get from more stuff is a sense of inner peace. When you seek out more money or a better career you are really seeking what you believe will make you feel more at peace.
Inner peace is something you cultivate within yourself. Meditation is a great tool that you can use to help you cultivate a greater sense of inner peace.
6. The Power of Creation
You have the power to co-create your life. The law of attraction is a powerful law and you have the power to use your thoughts and your energy to create what you want in your life.
It is the power to create your world. You deliberately direct and control your thoughts and your energy towards that which you DO want instead of surrendering to your idle thoughts of what has been or what is wrong or missing from your life.
You have the ability to choose your thoughts. You have a marvelous imagination and you can manifest anything that you can think or imagine.
7. The Power of Abundance
Living an abundant life is not only your right, it is your obligation. God is lavish abundance. There is nothing wrong or “dirty” about being abundant.
Abundance is not just about having more than enough money and resources. It is an abundance of all your needs in life.
Only when you live an abundant life can you have more than enough to share and give away.
What Is My Spiritual Power? – Conclusion
When you start to cultivate these 7 spiritual powers in your life you will cultivate an energy that emanates from your life in every aspect.
If joy, peace, love and gratitude is WHAT you are then that will shine through in everything you do. It gives you true power because you will affect change without trying.
How different would your spouse respond to you if all you have inside you is peace, love and joy?
How different would your kids be around you if that is all you have inside you?
How different would your co-workers respond to you?
Spiritual power is not in what you impose on others. It is what you radiate and attracts back to you because of what you are inside.
The energy that your being and your life radiate come from inside. Your energy affects everything.
The energy of love can only attract more love. If hate comes into the presence of love, it simply disappears just as darkness can not exist in the presence of light.
If you ARE peace, love, joy, and gratitude then the people, events, and circumstances that exist at lower energies of hate, anger, fear, and frustration simply can not exist in your presence.
Does that mean you never experience any of these lower energies ever again? No. Unless you become a spiritual master and learn how to transcend it completely.
As you start cultivating your spiritual power you can start to transcend these lower energies which is at the heart of most problems that human beings experience in their lives.
One of the great spiritual teachers of our time, Dr. Wayne Dyer used to close his talks with a great saying and I will quote it here in closing:
At any given moment of your life, you can choose to be a host to God or a hostage to your ego. The choice is yours.
